Car Fire Snarls Rush Hour Traffic
Buffalo, NY (WBEN) -- A vehicle fire on the New York State Thruway in West Seneca caused headaches for motorists Friday afternoon.
It happened eastbound at the Rt. 400 interchange around 4:20 PM - that's when callers began flooding the WBEN Traffic Command Center's tipline. One motorist was among the first to witness the fire.
"It's really involved. A state trooper just arrived on the scene."
Another driver passed through shortly thereafter.
"The flames are shooting out into the right-hand lane...there is also rubbernecking going on in the westbound lanes."
Fire crews quickly arrived on the scene. They were forced to shut down two of three lanes for about 40 minutes. During that time, firefighters extinguished the flames and a flatbed tow arrived to pull the vehicle out of the way.
All lanes re-opened shortly after 5:00 PM, and traffic returned to normal by 5:30 PM.
