Massa To Resign; Lee Hopes Governor Acts Qucikly To Fill Seat

Amherst (WBEN Newsroom)  -- WNY is losing a member of its congressional delegation today as Representative Eric Massa of Corning resigns amid allegations that he sexually harassed a male staffer.

Congressman Chris Lee says he can't say too much about Massa's resignation because of an ongoing ethics investigation but he views his departure as an opporutnity. "In doing so (resigning) I think it opens up a door to whoever else comes into Congress. It's my responsibility to try to find a good working partner."

Massa and Lee's districts butted up against each other in Rochester but Lee says he didn't know his colleague very well. "I wasn't very close with Eric. I am with other freshman democrat members, he and I didn't have a very close working relationship so I really didn't know him that well, never surprised with Washington."

Its up to Governor Paterson to call a special election to fill Massa's seat. Lee says "I think the governor needs to call the election as soon as possible because its unfair to constituents in the 29th district who could go on for months without a representative supporting them."
