New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, with his counterparts from Massachusetts and Maryland, is filing a lawsuit against Volkswagen AG and its affiliates.  The suit alleges that they knowingly sold more than 53,000 cars and SUVs that were polluting the environment.  Volkswagen is also accused of trying to cover up its role, rather than come clean.

Federal Reserve Board approval has been granted to the KeyCorp acquisition of First Niagara Financial Group Inc.  All that's left is for similar approval from the U.S. Comptroller of the Currency.  That would pave the way for KeyCorp to become the second largest retail bank in Western New York, behind only Buffalo-based M&T Bank.

KeyCorp will close 23 retail branches in Western New York as part of its anticipated purchase of First Niagara Financial Group Inc.  Business First reports this news came on the same day as a promise to keep job losses at a minimum while taking over First Niagara.  The branch closures will begin in October if they are approved.

M&T Bank Corporation has passed the Federal Reserve’s “stress test,” allowing it to carry out its 2016 capital plan.  According to Business First, M&T said it plans to repurchase of up to $1.15 billion of common shares during the four-quarter period starting today.  The common stock buy-back would be first considered by M&T’s board of directors.
